Ensuring that the air filter is checked and cleaned if necessary comes under the heading of ensuring that the bike is in good condition and the sound of perfect performance of a motocross bike. An air filter is like the lungs of a bike. It helps to keep off the bad things like dust and dirt from getting into the engine. A clean air filter means the bike will run better and last longer.
Let's walk through how to clean your MX air filter easily, keeping your ride in the best shape.
Why a Clean Air Filter Matters
Clean air filters are all about letting your bike's engine breathe properly; this prevents the harmful dirt from getting in, which improves the way your bike runs and even saves you on fuel. Neglect it, and you may end up with a less efficient engine, a less efficient you, and some expensive fixes on your hands.
Getting Ready to Clean
To start off, ensure the following items are within reach: a bucket, MX air filter cleaner, gloves, some clean water, and either a few paper towels or a rag. Oh, and oil for the air filter after cleaning.
The Cleaning Steps
1. Remove the Air Filter: When caring for your bike, only remove the filter. Take precautions to keep the engine safe by covering the air intake with something clean so that there will not be any dirt sneaking in.
2. Dust off: When a filter has collected a lot of dirt, give it a few taps to remove it. But be nice, please. You wouldn't want to hurt the poor thing.
3. Soak time: Place the filter in a bucket and drown it with the cleaning solution. Ensure it is wholly submerged in whatever time the cleaner recommends for soaking it. This will be helpful in dislodging some gunk.
4. Clean It: After soaking, massage the filter carefully so that the cleaner spreads on it. Do not tear it. A soft brush may be useful in the case of hardened spots.
5. Rinse Well: Wash the filter properly with clean water until the whole solution is rinsed off. This is very necessary so that all the cleaners used are drawn out to avoid trouble with the engine.
6. Dry Off: Gently squeeze (don't twist) water out, then let the filter dry in the air in a good air-flow area. Keep away from direct heat or sunlight to avoid damage.
7. Oil Up: Coat the filter evenly with air filter oil when dry. This should be done adequately to ensure that all incoming dirt is first trapped before your next ride.
8. Put It Back: Reinstall the filter in your bike, making sure it fits perfectly to keep dirt out.
Cleaning your MX air filter is, however, the easy, critical step in bike maintenance: Keep the engine running at peak efficiency and prolong its life. View our shop to see our selection of motocross air filters if you're in need of a new one! Clean air filter, happy engine!
